Newborn size
Size 4mm Aus/ 6 USA/ 8 UK (FPDC and BPHDC instruction’s below pattern)
Ch 5, join to form a ring
Rd 1: ch 2, 13 DC in ring, sl st in first dc
Rd 2: ch 2, DC in same as ch 2, 2 DC in each st, sl st in ch 2 (throughout pattern sl st in ch 2 after each round)
Rd 3: ch2, DC in same as ch 2, *1 DC in next st, 2 DC in next st* RPT from *,sl st
Rd 4: ch2, DC in same as ch 2, *1 DC in next 2 sts, 2 DC in next st* RPT from *,sl st
Rd 5: ch2, DC in same as ch 2, *1 DC in next 3 sts, 2 DC in next st* RPT from *,sl st
Rd 6-10: ch2, DC in each st around, sl st (change colour now)
Rd 11: ch2, FPDC in each st around, sl st (Front Post Double Crochet)
Rd 12: ch2, BPHDC in each st around, sl st (change colour now) (Back Post Half Double Crochet)
REPEAT rd 11-12 til you reach your desired length
Last Rd: ch2, FPDC in each st around, sl st and tie off.
Weave in all the loose ends
You can start rd 11-12 anytime you wish after the increase rounds.
I have added a beanie size chart at the end, that’s what I go off to get the right size, although I find the length is a bit long, so I usually do shorter beanies than what they say.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Instructions: yo, insert hook behind post of stitch (from front to back), yo, pull through, bring up even with last stitch completed, yo, pull through 2 loops, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through rem 2 lps to complete stitch
Back Post Half Double Crochet
Instructions: yo, insert hook into the back of your stitch (in other words from back to front), yo, pull through all loops to complete stitch
